So they say we people are unruly and, well, brutal.
Who would describe ordinary, hard-working citizens as unruly or brutal?
Only who tries to control people but failed would call us “暴民” — literally “violent crowd”, a contempt name from archaic, feudal Chinese towards people who refuse to compromise unconditionally.
Rulers and their affiliated media try to control and uglify the ones who dare to protest, and they keep tagging the people with the name.
So we become the defamed crowd of our time.
If we are so called for pursuing our cause protecting the freedom from being exploited and damaged by self-benefit bureaucracy as well as corrupted media, then we’ll happily see “暴民” as a glorifying compliment, and explain it as “untamed freedom”.
